By: Tyler Killgore
Grand Canyon is off to the best start of the program's Division I era, moving its record to 4-0Â by defeating New Mexico State 6-1 on Friday and Wichita State 4-0 on Sunday.
GCU defeats New Mexico State 6-1
After a tight victory last year against the Aggies, GCU secured a decisive victory under first-year head coach Ross Wilson.
In doubles on Court 2, Lopes freshman Tristan Berard and sophomore Andreas Loizas defeated Holland Snell and Lance Urlaub 6-2. While on Court 1, GCU senior Brice Patoux and sophomore Daniel Jankoski won 6-3 to secure the doubles point for a 1-0 Lopes lead.
"It was so important for us to start out winning the doubles point," Wilson said. "We were able to capture the momentum and keep winning."
In singles, freshman Charlie Pade of Australia made his Lopes debut and did not skip a beat with a 6-2, 6-2 win on Court 6.
On Court 5, Patoux showed his singles dominance defeating Thomas Duforets 6-2, 6-1. Berard kept his undefeated singles streak alive on Court 2, defeating Holland Snell of the Aggies 6-2, 6-4.
After his comeback victories in the home opener against Idaho, GCUÂ sophomore Diordan Macababbad defeated Laurendi Fischer 6-3, 6-2. This point eventually secured the match for the Lopes, as Aggies player Lance Urlaub was forced to retire.
"I really liked our willingness to play with consistency every point in singles and play with a high level of focus and intensity," Wilson said.
GCU rolls past Wichita State 4-0
The Lopes (4-0) pulled away to victory in an intense Sunday match against an experienced Wichita State team.
In the first doubles match, Patoux and Jankoski, the duo who reached he finals in the Mountain West Fall Qualifier, defeated Alejandro Jacome and Ilias Worthington in a close 7-5 match. On Court 2, Loizas and Berard battled back from a 3-1 hole to eventually win 7-5.
"The doubles point was key in a great win today," Wilson said.
The young Lopes continued to play impressively despite only having one upperclassman.
Berard and Macababbad dominated in singles. Berard defeated Alejandro Jacome 6-1, 6-3, and Macababbad took care of Court 4 with a 6-2, 6-0 win.
With a chance to clinch on Court 5, Patoux and the Shockers' Pablo Alcaya had a tense match, but it ultimately resulted in a  6-2, 6-1 GCU win that secure a 4-0 dual victory.
The Lopes have a break before they play UTSA at home on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
