Lopes' Ramirez continues to show growth, tallies 12 kills
LINCOLN, Neb. — Grand Canyon fell to No. 1 Nebraska 25-12, 25-23, 25-18 on Saturday night at Bob Devaney Sports Center. In front of 8,502 fans, the Lopes battled through stretches of momentum, showing resilience against the top-ranked Huskers.
The opening set saw Nebraska build an early lead before senior outside hitter Anaelena Ramirez put GCU (6-2) on the board with her first kill.
Ramirez went on to finish with 12 kills and four digs, while graduate middle blocker Hayden Goodman added a service ace and five blocks for the Lopes.
"I'm super proud of Ana," GCU head coach Kendra Potts said. "Tonight, she played free and played the ball that she knows how to play while doing it against the No. 1 team in the country. My hope for Ana is that she just continues to build confidence."
Despite the push, Nebraska's blocking and serving helped close out a first-set win, 25-12.
The Lopes responded with their best sequence in Set 2.
Ramirez provided an early kill, and freshmen Macey Hughes and Aubrey Bellus combined for a block that energized the team.
As Nebraska (8-0) neared set point, graduate senior outside hitter Sophia Parlanti delivered three late kills to cut the Huskers lead to 24-23 before Nebraska ended the frame with a block.
"We wanted to see where we are in Week 3 of the season, and I thought the urgency our team showed was really important," Potts said. "Our thing is to win the day we're in, and so I think the motivation of getting back into the gym on Monday will be high."
The third set featured another strong GCU start. Goodman and freshman setter/opposite Bella Nunez opened with a block for the first point, and Nunez followed with a service ace that pushed the Lopes ahead 5-3.
Nunez filled the box score with nine assists, eight digs and two aces, while junior libero Bella Anderson added seven digs and a service ace.
Nebraska completed the sweep with a 25-18 win in the third set.
"We put this on the schedule for a reason because as an athletic department, we're wanting to do big things," Potts said. "If that's what we're doing, then let's put ourselves in the arenas with programs that have rich history, amazing fans and the highest caliber players. This match showed us areas we want to grow and improve, areas we're growing, and it gives us momentum heading into Arizona State and Pepperdine before Mountain West play."
The Lopes return home to take on Pepperdine, Milwaukee and Arizona State in the Sun Devil Classic from Sept. 18-20.
