MARICOPA, Ariz. – After a cold, windy day at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Course on Wednesday, the weather was nearly perfect for the Cowgirl Classic final round as Grand Canyon finished fifth out of 15 schools to close out the regular season.
GCU shot 28 over par, 21 shots better than sixth-place Wyoming and two shots back of fourth-place Sacramento State. Iowa State took home first place at 3 over, followed by UNLV at 11 over and Santa Clara at 22 over.
Beginning at 8 a.m., it was a vast difference in play from the first two rounds on Wednesday, when howling winds and cold temperatures made Thursday's sunshine and low-60 temperatures welcome for most of the final round.
Even with tough conditions Wednesday, senior
Anci Dy completed one of her best tournaments to date in a GCU uniform, finishing 1 over to tie for third place among 91 golfers. Dy shot 1 under on the front nine and 1 over on the back on Thursday, notching two birdies. She totaled 39 pars for the tournament, tying with junior
Lena Tremouille for most on the team and tying for third most of the field.
Graduate
Calynne Rosholt had the best third-round score for the Lopes, carding a 1-under score with five birdies to tie for 17th at 8 over. Rosholt tallied three straight birdies on holes 2 through 4 and had two birdies over her final three holes played.
Tremouille finished two shots back of Rosholt at 10 over to tie for 21st and shot 1 under over her final eight holes. GCU sophomore
Brenna Preap tied for 24th at 11 over, followed by Lopes sophomore
Jess Haines at 23 over, tying for 59th.
GCU junior
Amelia Curtis (55th) and freshman
Matilda Samervong (T-53rd) combined for five birdies Thursday as individual entries.
The team's top-five finish marked the seventh of the season for the Lopes, who enter the WAC Championship with the highest national ranking of any conference team (No. 75 in Clippd Scoreboard rankings).
The WAC Championship will be held at Wigwam Golf Club in Litchfield Park, Arizona, on April 14-16. GCU seeks its second WAC Championship in program history after winning in 2018.
