Grand Canyon had its eight-game home winning streak snapped at the hands of Cal State Fullerton in a 4-2 loss on Wednesday night at GCU Ballpark.
The Titans (14-15) scored all four of their runs with two outs in the fifth inning after an error extended the inning.
GCU (18-11) made things interesting in the ninth, loading the bases to place the tying run in scoring position and winning run on base. A fly out ended the threat.
The Lopes out-hit the Titans 5-4 in a quiet offensive contest. The teams combined for four errors but GCU's proved more costly.
Playing its fifth game in six days, GCU's pitching staff combined for a strong evening. Freshman righty
Ross Clark was the tough-luck loser, tossing five innings without allowing an earned run. Clark struck out three and walked one.
In relief, senior
Barrett Skaugrud and juniors
Justin Hanson and
Jace Smith combined for four hitless and scoreless innings.
The Lopes got to work offensively in the first inning with the three batters reaching base. After a sacrifice fly by junior first baseman
Zach Yorke scored the game's first run, a double play ended the first inning after GCU tried to score a second run on another would-be sacrifice fly.
GCU's offense went quiet in the second through seventh innings, logging two base hits and no runs.
Cal State Fullerton's four-run fifth flipped a 1-0 Titans' deficit into a 4-1 lead.
Graduate center fielder
Eddy Pelc pulled the Lopes closer with a solo home run in the eighth inning, but 4-2 was as close as the Lopes would get. Pelc's sixth home run of the season tied him for the team lead.
Senior outfielder
Maxwell Andeel made his season debut after returning from injury. He started in right field and promptly picked up his first base hit with a single in the first. Sophomore infielder
Austin Matranga made his career debut, pinch-hitting in the fifth inning and finishing out the game at second base.
GCU closes the homestand 4-1 with a sweep of Seattle U and Tuesday's victory over Arizona.
The Lopes return to conference action on Friday, trekking west for a three-game set with California Baptist. GCU will play at CBU for the first time since 2022. In a scheduling oddity, only three of the last 27 games in the series between the Lopes and the Lancers have been contested in Riverside.
