Conference play resumes as Grand Canyon takes to the road to play California Baptist in a matchup of two top-35 teams in earned run average. The three-game series in Riverside gets underway on Friday at 6 p.m.

3 THINGS TO KNOW

RIVERSIDE RARITY: In a scheduling oddity, the location of the Grand Canyon-California Baptist series has been one-sided of late. The Lopes and Lancers have been concurrently in the WAC since 2019, but GCU is making just its second visit to Riverside. Of the last 27 meetings between the two programs, all but three have been played in Phoenix.

PITCHING PROMINENCE: GCU and CBU both feature earned run averages under 4.20. The Lopes rank 35th nationally and second in the conference with their 4.19 ERA. The Lancers have a 4.01 ERA that leads the WAC and ranks 28th in the country.

WAC STREAK: GCU has won 17 straight WAC series and 30 of its last 32. The Lopes have won 20 straight WAC road series, last losing in 2019.

SCOUTING CALIFORNIA BAPTIST

California Baptist is tied with Utah Valley for second in the WAC at 4-2 through two weekends of conference play. The Lancers opened WAC competition with a home series win over Utah Tech and then won at UT Arlington. In both series, California Baptist dropped the series opener before responding to take the final two games.

The Lancers hold a 17-11 record on the season despite an uncharacteristic eight-game losing streak from Feb. 21 to March 4. CBU has nonconference weekend series wins over Portland, Air Force and Rutgers.

CBU comes into the series as a balanced club on paper, hitting .297 (77th nationally), holding a .417 on-base percentage (54th) and posting a 4.01 ERA (28th).

WHAT'S NEXT?

GCU returns to Phoenix to host a three-game set against Utah Valley on the following weekend.
