Lopes take advantage of home court, going 3-0 on homestand
Grand Canyon extended its winning streak to three with a hard-fought 4-2 win over Montana State on Saturday morning at GCU Tennis Facility.
The Lopes (8-5) dropped the opening doubles match on Court 1 but bounced back with victories on the next two courts to secure the doubles point over the Bobcats (6-6). The freshman pair of Bella Crossman and Angelina Mihajlovic evened the doubles action with a 6-3 win on Court 2, while GCU senior Valentina Del Marco and freshman Peyton Duckett sealed the point with a matching 6-3 victory on Court 3.
In singles, Crossman gave GCU an early boost by moving to 9-1 this season with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win on Court 3. Montana State responded as Hudson Hawkins took Court 5 (6-4, 6-3), and Angel Bean edged Mihajlovic on Court 4 (6-2, 2-6, 6-2) to even the dual score at 2-2.
Hofbauer came up big for the Lopes on Court 1, grinding out a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Marta Garcia-Reboredo to put GCU one point away from the win. Del Marco delivered the clinching moment on Court 6, overcoming a second-set slip to defeat Kavya Khirwar 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
With the team match decided, Arangio's contest on Court 2 remained unfinished when it was locked in a third-set battle.
The Lopes went 3-0 on their homestand, which accounted for half of this season's matches at GCU Tennis Facility in their road-heavy season.
GCU will get back on the road this week, with matches at Northern Arizona on Wednesday and Arizona on Sunday.
