SEDONA, Ariz. - Delays and stoppages are rare for any golf outing in Arizona, but with the Red Rocks Invitational at Oakcreek Country Club, play was hard to come by this weekend with frost and snow in the Sedona area.
Finishing 18 of 54 scheduled holes, Grand Canyon focused on the assignment on hand and finished first out of 19 schools, shooting even par to defeat host school Northern Arizona by one stroke.
With delays that started with round one Friday, GCU had to wait a full day to finish the first and only round of play Sunday afternoon. After getting through roughly 13 holes Friday, play was halted due to snow and frost. The frost accumulated and delayed play all day Saturday, with first- and final-round action resuming late Sunday morning.
Graduate
Calynne Rosholt and senior
Anci Dy lead the Lopes by each shooting 1 under, finishing in a tie for sixth place and two off the overall lead. The duo combined for seven birdies with only one bogey over their final 10 holes played combined.
GCU junior
Lena Tremouille and sophomore teammate
Jess Haines tied for 19th at 1 over. Tremouille shot 1 under over her final nine holes, with Haines going even over her final seven. Lopes sophomore
Brenna Preap shot 2 over to tie for 31st, while GCU senior
Amelia Curtis and freshman teammate
Matilda Samervong registered 1 over cards as individuals. Curtis tied Dy for the most birdies in one round with four.
The win is GCU's second over its last three tournaments and its fifth top-five finish this season. It stays in the Valley for the final two regular-season tournaments of the spring campaign, with the next scheduled tournament to be played at the PING/ASU Invitational at Papago Golf Club in Tempe March 28-30.
