GCU loses to Montana 4-3
GCU came up just short in a hard-fought match against Montana (11-3), falling 4-3 on Friday at GCU Tennis Facility.
The Lopes got off to a strong start by securing the doubles point. The duo of
Jonathan Da Silva and
Brice Patoux won 6-4 on Court 1, while
Diordan Macababbad and
Nikita Volonski followed with a 6-2 victory on Court 2. The match on Court 3 remained unfinished with GCU leading 4-3.
In singles, Volonski put the Lopes ahead early as he won by forfeit on Court 1 after taking the first set. Montana quickly responded with back-to-back wins on Courts 5 and 4, as Eivind Tandberg defeated Da Silva 6-3, 6-2, and
Finbar McGarvey answered with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Fernando Perez to put GCU back up 3-2.
However, the Grizzlies fought back in the final stretch. Duncan McCall took down
Paolo Rosati 6-2, 6-4 on Court 3 to even the score at 3-3. The deciding match came down to Court 2, where Wiger-Nordas outlasted Patoux in a grueling three-setter, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), sealing the narrow 4-3 victory for Montana.
GCU defeats Weber State 4-0
The Lopes claimed a long-awaited victory over Weber State on Sunday at GCU Tennis Facility.
This victory marks the Lopes' first win against the Wildcats since 1973, snapping a 10-match losing streak against Weber State that dates to 1976.
In doubles, a pair of first-time winning duos helped the Lopes secure an early advantage. FreshmanÂ
Diordan Macababbad and sophomore
Nikita Volonski earned their first win as a duo with a 6-2 victory on Court 2. Weber State won on Court 1 (6-4), but the Lopes secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win from freshman
Finbar McGarvey and senior
Paolo Rosati on Court 3, giving GCU a 1-0 lead.
Rosati claimed victory on Court 2 due to an injury forfeit from the Wildcats, and Volonski followed with a dominating straight-set win on Court 1 (6-1, 6-3), extending the Lopes' lead to 3-0 with four courts remaining. Volonski's victory improves his overall record to 8-2.
Senior Jonathan Da Silva sealed the win for GCU with a 6-4, 6-2 straight-set victory on Court 5, giving the Lopes a 4-0 lead and clinching the match.
Freshman
Finbar McGarvey was not far behind Da Silva, securing another dominant straight-set victory over Weber State's Liam Day (6-2, 6-2), extending GCU's lead to 5-0 and closing out the day for both teams.
Two matches were left unfinished. On Court 2, sophomore
Brice Patoux led after one set before the match was called. Freshman Macababbad's match was also left unfinished as the Lopes had already clinched the victory.
The Lopes return to GCU Tennis Facility on March 26 at 4 p.m. for a match against Cal Poly.
