CORVALLIS, Ore. — Grand Canyon scored four late runs to make Friday's opener interesting, but the Lopes fell at No. 8 Oregon State 6-4 on a rainy afternoon at Goss Stadium.
Lopes junior right fielder
Josh Wakefield led off the game with a double off the top of the left field wall, kickstarting a four-hit day that brought his average to .475 through 10 starts on the season.
The Lopes' only other batter with multiple hits was freshman infielder
Scuba Smolinski, who made his collegiate debut as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning and picked up base hits in each of his first two at bats.
Oregon State (13-3) built a 6-0 advantage by scoring three in the third, one in the fifth and two in the sixth.
GCU (12-6) threatened for much of the afternoon, stranding runners on base in five of the first seven innings.
The Lopes finally broke through in the eighth for four runs.
Wakefield, sophomore left fielder
Carson Ohland and junior first baseman
Zach Yorke all reached to load the bases to open the inning. Graduate center fielder
Eddy Pelc coaxed a bases-loaded walk for GCU's first run. A pinch-hitting sophomore
Kade Huff drove in one on a productive out. After sophomore catcher
Marcus Galvan reached on an error that scored GCU's third run, Smolinski singled up the middle for his first career RBI.
To continue momentum, GCU junior reliever
Elijah Higginbottom retired the Beavers in order in the bottom of the eighth, but the Lopes couldn't generate any offense in the ninth.
The Lopes will play Santa Clara on Saturday with an adjusted first pitch time of 11 a.m. (Phoenix time).
