First home match since Feb. 1 goes to Lopes
Grand Canyon (6-5) returned home in style, shutting out New Mexico (6-6) with a commanding 4-0 victory on Friday at the GCU Tennis Facility.
The Lopes set the tone early in doubles play, sweeping all three courts to take the first point of the match. Karina Hofbauer and Gala Arangio led the charge with a decisive 6-1 win on Court 1. Bella Crossman and Dania Deaifi secured the doubles point with a tight 7-5 victory on Court 2, while Peyton Duckett and Angelina Mihajlovic added a 6-4 win on Court 3.
Hofbauer carried her momentum into singles, delivering a 6-1, 6-2 win on Court 1 to put GCU up 2-0. Crossman followed with an efficient 6-1, 6-2 victory on Court 4, and Deaifi clinched the match with a dominant 6-4, 6-0 performance on Court 3.
With the team victory secured, three singles matches remained unfinished. Arangio was battling on Court 2, having won the first set 6-4 but trailing 0-5 in the second. Mihajlovic was in a tight contest on Court 5 (7-5, 1-2), while Duckett had just started her second set after dropping the first 5-7.
The Lopes' strong all-around performance sends them forward with confidence as they continue their season. They return to the GCU Tennis Facility on Wednesday with a matchup against UC Riverside.Â
