The Grand Canyon women's swimming and diving team will compete in its final meet Saturday before the WAC Championships, taking on Northern Colorado at 11 a.m. at the Butler Hancock Swimming Pool.
This will be the last meet before heading to Houston for the Feb. 26-March 1 conference championships.
The GCU squads are coming off a trip to UNLV, where they lost a close battle.
In diving, GCU sophomoreÂ
Lacey Neighbor took fourth in the 1-meter event (236.70) and finished second at 3 meters (258.75).
Â
GCU graduateÂ
Raphaela Nakashima and freshman teammateÂ
Beth Young showcased their strength in the breaststroke races. Nakashima won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.86), while Young followed in third at 1:03.38. Young later placed second in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:17.54 finish.
Â
Nakashima was named WAC Women's Swimmer of the Week following her performance.
Last year, GCU hosted Northern Colorado, winning 173-125 behind Nakashima's and
Paula Martinez Moreno's efforts.Â
Martinez Moreno, a sophomore, took first in the 200-yard butterfly with a pool record time of 1 minute, 59.26 seconds. The previous pool record was also set by Martinez Moreno almost a year ago to the day, but Saturday's time was nearly a second faster.
