4-1 win over Gonzaga highlights third California trip for Lopes
Grand Canyon women's tennis (5-5) wrapped up a challenging road trip in San Luis Obispo, securing a dominant victory over Gonzaga before falling to Cal Poly.
Â
The Lopes started strong on Saturday against Gonzaga, taking four of six singles matches to earn the team victory.
In doubles, Hofbauer and Gala Arangio set the tone early with a 6-1 win on Court 1, but Gonzaga responded by taking Courts 2 and 3 to claim the doubles point. Despite the early setback, GCU dominated in singles play to clinch the match.
Karina Hofbauer led the way with a 6-4, 6-3 win on Court 1, while Dania Deaifi, Angelina Mihajlovic, and Valentina Del Marco all posted straight-set victories to secure the 4-1 win. It was the fourth time the Lopes had won four or more singles courts in the same match, their second in a row after a 7-0 routing of Pacific the previous weekend.
Â
On Saturday, the Lopes faced a tough Cal Poly squad and fell 5-2 despite strong individual performances.Â
In doubles play, Cal Poly claimed the point with tight 7-5 wins on Courts 1 and 2, while Court 3 remained unfinished at 5-5.
Hofbauer earned another hard-fought win on Court 1, battling through a second-set tiebreak to prevail 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2.  Deaifi added another point for GCU with a 6-3, 6-3 victory on Court 3. Hofbauer and Deaifi were the lone players to win both singles matches on the weekend.Â
Cal Poly controlled the rest of the singles matchups, winning in three sets on Courts 2 and 4 while securing straight-set victories on Courts 5 and 6.Â
The Lopes return home for the first time since February 1st, when they take on New Mexico at the GCU Tennis Facility. The match is set for 1 p.m. on Friday the 28th.
