Grand Canyon lost a tightly contested matchup to Cal State Fullerton 4-3 on Saturday at GCU Tennis Facility.
The Lopes (1-3) looked good initially in doubles with Court 3 finishing first on a 6-3 win by GCU's freshmen duo of
Bella Crossman and
Angelina Mihajlovic. GCU dropped Courts 1 and 2, giving Cal State Fullerton the doubles point.
Courts 4 and 6 wrapped up first in singles with Lopes freshman
Peyton Duckett losing in straight sets on Court 6 and Crossman taking a 6-3, 6-2 in on Court 4 over Fullerton's Kaytlin Taylor.
Crossman remains GCU's only undefeated singles player, beginning her collegiate career 3-0 on Court 4.
Lopes sophomore
Gala Arangio continued her stellar play on Court 3 this season with a straight-set sweep to tie the dual match at 2-2. The Lopes then needed a flip on Court 2 or 5 to keep the match alive after first-set losses by juniorÂ
Dania Deaifi on Court 2 and Mihajlovic on Court 5. Deaifi and Mihajlovic fought back in their second sets, but each lost 6-4 to give the Titans the victory.Â
The match finished with GCU freshman
Karina Hofbauer battling Cal State Fullerton's Sein Myoung on Court 1. Hofbauer took the first set 6-4 before Myoung bounced back to take the second set 6-2. A ten-point tiebreaker went to Hofbauer in 10-6 fashion, tightening the Fullerton dual win to 4-3
The Lopes go to Texas next weekend for matches at former WAC foe Stephen F. Austin on Saturday and fellow WAC member UT Arlington on Sunday. The UTA matchup will not count toward a conference record.
