ALBUQUERQUE,
N.M. — Grand Canyon fell in a four-set match Saturday at New Mexico by scores of 25–21, 13–25, 17–25, 28–30.
The Lopes were led by the freshman duo of
Bella Nunez and
Aubrey Bellus.
Bellus, a middle blocker, finished with nine kills on 16 swings (.438) and a team-best eight blocks, totaling 14 points.
Nunez, a setter/opposite, continued her impressive run with her fourth straight triple-double. The El Paso native had 15 kills on 35 attempts (.343), 16 assists, 13 digs and four blocks.
GCU (11-8, 3-5 Mountain West) came out strong with a clean .500 hitting percentage in the opening set, capitalizing on a balanced attack to take a 1–0 match lead.
The Lopes surged ahead with a 7–2 scoring run at the end of the set, with back-to-back kills from sophomore middle blocker
Aubrey Goodere.
New Mexico rebounded, controlling the second and third sets with aggressive serving and a steady side-out rate to take a 2-1 match lead.
The fourth set was tightly contested, featuring 12 ties and five lead changes. Grand Canyon rattled off a 6-0 run to earn two set points at 24-22 lead. Junior transfer
Briley Decker was largely responsible with back-to-back kills followed by assisted block with Bellus for the next two scores.
New Mexico (9-10, 1-7 MW) found a way to fight back, wiping out another GCU set point at 26-25. After haymakers from both sides, the home squad closed the match out with a 30-28 set win on a questionable net call. The Lopes did not have a challenge remaining.
With GCU tallying 54 kills, 61 digs and 11 blocks, senior outside hitter
Anaelena Ramirez contributed nine of the kills and 12 of the digs.
The Lopes play next week at San José State on Thursday and Fresno State on Saturday.
