Nunez notches 7th triple-double of season
SAN JOSÉ, Calif. — Grand Canyon defeated San José State 3–1 (25–27, 25–23, 25–18, 25–20) in a very important Mountain West match on Thursday night at Spartan Gym.
The Lopes hit .235 as a team with 60 kills on 166 attempts and outblocked the Spartans 11–6.
Freshman setter/opposite Bella Nunez led the Lopes with 15 kills on 31 swings for a .323 hitting clip, 20 assists, 14 digs, two blocks and an ace that totaled 17.5 points.
The triple-double marks her fifth consecutive match with one.
GCU freshman middle blocker Aubrey Bellus helped carry the offense early, contributing 12 kills on 21 attempts with a .524 hitting percentage and four blocks.
Junior libero Bella Anderson anchored the defense with a match-high 24 digs and seven assists.
In the opening set, the Spartans led 24-22 before the Lopes fought off two set points with kills from senior outside hitter Anaelena Ramirez and Nunez. Ramirez finished with 13 kills, six digs and four blocks for GCU. But he Spartans still claimed the set 27-25.
The Lopes answered in the second frame, evening the match with kills from sophomore middle blocker Aubrey Goodere and graduate outside Sophia Parlanti.
For the match, Goodere tallied nine kills and three blocks while Parlanti had eight kills.
The third set was GCU's most dominant stretch, as the Lopes hit .424 as a team and controlled the tempo to close out a 25–18 set victory for a 2-1 match lead.
In the fourth, GCU went on a 4-1 run to grab an 8-4 lead. From there, the Lopes maintained efficiency, with a fitting Nunez kill to seal the 25–20 finish.
The win improved Grand Canyon's record to 12–8 overall and 4–5 in Mountain West play. San José State fell to 9–11 overall and 4–5 in the conference.
Lopes sophomore setter Taylor Kubacak added a double-double with 26 assists and 16 digs.
The win is pivotal for GCU because the two teams will not see each other again during the regular season, giving GCU an important tiebreaker.
