BERKELEY, Calif. — Grand Canyon dropped both matches over the weekend at the ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament.
ITA Kickoff Weekend on the women's side had 14 locations across the country with four teams at each "regional". The Lopes had a tall task ahead of them with multiple ranked teams within the Berkeley regional.
On Friday, the Lopes took on the host No. 14 ranked California. Cal took the match 4-0 as they clinched the match at four points. Sophomore
Gala Arangio took her first set on Court 3, but no one else was able to put themselves in position for a point.
When No. 17 ranked Oklahoma knocked off San Diego State, the Lopes and Aztecs were lined up for a consolation match Saturday.
Grand Canyon took each court down to the wire in doubles, but eventually fell 0-1 early to SDSU. In singles, the Lopes struck first to tie things at 1-1.
Freshman
Bella Crossman came out victorious on Court 4 winning 6-0, 6-3 over San Diego State's Liisa Varul. On Court 1,
Karina Hofbauer made things interesting by taking the second set 6-2 after dropping the first 2-6. However, time ran out for her when the Aztecs clinched the match, winning it 5-1.
All seven players on the roster were involved in the lineup for both matches and all of them gained experience against two of the better teams on the schedule all season.
Grand Canyon will head home and host Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 11 a.m. (Phoenix time).
