Coming off a second-place outing at the Southern Dunes Invitational at nearby Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club, the Grand Canyon men's golf team heads northeast to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to partake in the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate at the UNM Championship Course.
Â
First- and second-round play begins Friday with third and final round being played Saturday at the 7,546-yard, par-72 course.
Â
The field includes 17 teams, nine of which made the NCAA tournament a season ago. Fellow regional teams joining GCUÂ include host New Mexico, Fresno State, San Diego State, Arkansas State, Long Beach State, LMU, Stetson and UNLV.
Â
Colorado, Eastern Michigan, New Mexico State, Oral Roberts, San Francisco, Santa Clara, USC and UTEP round out the field.
Â
The Lopes earned second at their season-opening tournament this month, when only GCU and USC scored 20 under par or better at the eight-team tournament in Maricopa, Arizona.
Â
Three players finished in the top 15 for GCU, which was led by freshman
Nixon Lauritzen, who recorded a 63 in his first collegiate tournament round and tied for third overall in the tournament. Lopes sophomore
Gavin O'Neill tied for fourth, while freshman
Matthew Diehl tied for 12th as the young core pushed the Lopes up the leaderboard over Sept. 9-10.
Â
The starting five remains the same this weekend with Lauritzen, O'Neill and Diehl joined by graduate
Tommaso Zorzetto and senior
Kiko Coelho.
