Grand Canyon's regular-season slate concludes in Orem, Utah, where the Lopes will play the WAC's No. 2 team in the standings for the third consecutive weekend. GCU has already clinched the conference's regular-season crown and No. 1 seed, while Utah Valley is fighting to maintain its hold on second place. The series begins on Thursday at 5 p.m. (Phoenix time).
3 THINGS TO KNOW
- WAC CHAMPS: GCU clinched its fourth consecutive WAC regular-season title on Saturday. The Lopes have now won six of the last seven WAC regular-season titles and hold the nation's best conference winning percentage the last six years. GCU has won 14 consecutive conference series and 27 of its last 29 conference series. The Lopes will be the No. 1 seed and get a double bye in next week's WAC Tournament.
- AT HOME IN OREM: GCU has played games in Orem in the last five non-COVID seasons. Including this series, the Lopes will have played 16 of their last 19 games against Utah Valley in Orem. The Lopes are 17-3 in their last 20 games vs. Utah Valley.
- ANOTHER YEAR, ANOTHER WILSON: Senior outfielder Tyler Wilson is on a 21-game hitting streak, GCU's longest since Chad De La Guerra recorded a 24-game streak in 2015. Wilson leads the WAC with a .379 batting average, is the seventh GCU player to record 200 hits at the Division I level and has hit a least .300 in all four of his GCU seasons.
SCOUTING UTAH VALLEY
Utah Valley is looking to lock up the WAC's No. 2 seed and receive a double bye for next week's WAC Tournament. The Wolverines are just 10-15 in nonconference play, but they've gone 17-10 in WAC games to have a one-game lead on a three-way tie for third between California Baptist, Abilene Christian and Tarleton State.
The Wolverines rely heavily on their power, slugging .522 (30th nationally) and homering 100 times (14th nationally). Utah Valley scores 7.8 runs per game which leads the WAC. Utah Valley holds a 6.73 earned run average which ranks in the bottom 100 nationally.
WHAT'S NEXT?
