The Grand Canyon women's tennis team found out its first-round NCAA tournament destination during Monday's selection show: the Los Angeles Regional.
The No. 58 Lopes (22-2) will face No. 23 San Diego (16-7) in a first-round matchup at USC's Marks Stadium on Friday at 11 a.m.
Appearing in the NCAA tournament for the third time in program history and the second time in a row under head coach
Katarina Adamovic, GCU will be the regional's No. 3 seed. For the first time, the Lopes will not have to play the regional host in the first round.
No. 11 national seed USC and Cal Poly will meet up on the other side of the regional.
The Lopes cruised through WAC play in the regular season and the WAC Tournament. GCU won its final five conference matches by scores of 7-0 or 6-1 before sweeping through the tournament with three 4-0 victories.
GCU enters the NCAA regional having won 13 consecutive matches. The Lopes' last loss was a narrow 4-3 defeat to No. 41 Baylor on Feb. 25.
The Lopes and Toreros meet for the first time since 2018.
San Diego was the No. 2 team out of the West Coast Conference and dropped the league's tournament championship dual match to top-seeded Pepperdine. All seven of the Toreros' losses this season have come to teams ranked in the nation's top 51 at the time of the match. San Diego's lowest-ranked loss was to No. 51 Oklahoma on Feb. 23.
San Diego is appearing in the NCAA tournament for the 16th time in program history and fifth tournament in a row. The Toreros won their first-round matchup against No. 28 Cal last season before falling to No. 8 Texas in the second round.
Friday's match
will be streamed by USC.
