Grand Canyon lost a 2-1 series finale with Utah Tech on Sunday at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark. The Lopes had won the first two games of the series to ensure their 11th consecutive conference series victory.
The Lopes (22-18, 13-5 WAC) were limited to three hits and had several more would-be base hits robbed by an impressive Utah Tech defensive display.
GCU remain in a first-place tie with California Baptist atop the WAC standings with both clubs dropping their Sunday series finales.
The Lopes only posed a significant offensive threat in the eighth inning, when they trailed 2-0. GCU junior designated hitter
Maxwell Andeel drew a leadoff walk and sophomore shortstop
Emilio Barreras singled through the right side of the infield. Senior right fielder
Eddy Pelc produced the Lopes' first run when he grounded out. Senior center fielder
Cade Verdusco drew a walk to extend the inning and get runners on the corners, but a groundout ended the threat with the tying run 90 feet away.
Outside of the eighth inning when GCU sent six batters to the plate, the Lopes only sent three batters over the minimum to the plate in the other eight innings.
The Lopes were 9-0 entering Sunday's game when limiting an opponent to two or fewer runs.
A strong pitching performance was turned in by sophomore right-handers
Isaac Lyon and
Walter Quinn. Lyon — who grew up 5 miles from Utah Tech — threw seven innings of two-run baseball, walking none and striking out eight. Quinn continued a strong season out of the bullpen, facing the minimum in two hitless innings.
GCU will not play a midweek game before it visits Seattle U for a three-game WAC series, which starts Friday at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue, Washington.
