Lopes aim to defend crown at WAC tourney

GCU enters as No. 1 seed, looking to back up 2024 regular-season title and defend 2023 tourney title
The Grand Canyon women's tennis team heads to Harlingen, Texas, as the top seed in the 2024 WAC Tennis Championships. Coming off a perfect 7-0 conference season and a regular-season title, the Lopes will need to win three matches to repeat as WAC Tournament Champions.

HOW THEY GOT HERE
GCU went 7-0 in WAC play to claim the No. 1 seed in the tournament. The Lopes' only conference match within a point was at Seattle U on March 24, the second match of the conference schedule. The Redhawks are the No. 4 seed and would face the Lopes in the semifinal if the Redhawks can get past No. 5 Abilene Christian. GCU has won 10 straight matches entering the WAC Tournament.The Lopes have compiled their best Division I season under newly named WAC Coach of the Year Katarina Adamovic. GCU holds a 19-2 record and is No. 62 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings. The Lopes are led by top singles player Natasha Puehse, who was named WAC Player of the Year for the third time in her Lopes career.

GCU'S TOURNAMENT HISTORY
LAST TOURNEY TITLE: GCU claimed the 2023 WAC Tennis Tournament as the No. 3Â seed. The Lopes shut out No. 5 Abilene Christian in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal and championship matches, GCU avenged regular-season losses to top-seeded UT Arlington and No. 2-seed Tarleton State to claim the tournament championship. The Lopes narrowly defeated the Texans 4-3 in the final.
TOTAL WAC TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIPS: In sum, the Lopes have won two WAC Tournament titles. In addition to last year's championship, GCU won its first tournament title in 2021.
