ARLINGTON, Texas — Grand Canyon played defending WAC champion UT Arlington tight in a 4-3 loss on Saturday afternoon.
The Lopes (6-12, 1-1 WAC) had their three-match winning streak snapped but played the Mavericks as close as any WAC team has.
UT Arlington (7-7, 1-0 WAC) is in its second season in the WAC. In its seven prior matches against WAC teams in regular-season or conference tournament play, the Mavericks never had an opponent play within a point of them until the Lopes did on Saturday at UT Arlington. Cumulatively, the Mavericks defeated WAC opposition 40-4 and swept GCU 7-0 last season.
GCU decisively took the doubles point with a 6-2 win on Court 2 and a 6-3 win on Court 3. The Lopes made it a clean sweep of doubles with a hard-fought win on the top court by graduate
Gerhard Sullwald and sophomore
David Wekesa winning the set 7-6 after a 7-5 tiebreaker.
The Lopes have claimed the doubles point in five consecutive matches and 10 of 18 this season.
In singles play, UT Arlington took the match lead by winning on Courts 4 and 6 in two sets.
Playing on the top court for the fifth time this season, graduate
Pablo Carretero Salvador recovered from being shut out 6-0 in the first set to win 6-4 and force a third set. He fell 6-2 in the third set to give a third singles victory to UT Arlington.
The Mavericks clinched the match with another three-set thriller on Court 4. Lopes junior
Jonathan Da Silva won 7-6 before UT Arlington fought back to win the second and third sets 6-3.
GCU finished out the match strong with wins on Court 2 and 3. Wekesa improved his team-leading record to 10-4 on the season and 9-2 on the third court with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 win.
