SEATTLE — No. 63 Grand Canyon used the bottom four spots in its singles lineup to carry the Lopes to a 4-3 win at Seattle U on Sunday morning.
The Lopes (14-2, 2-0 WAC) completed a 2-0 opening weekend of conference action and, in doing so, set the program's record for most regular-season wins in a Division I season. GCU is on a five-match winning streak.
Of GCU's 14 wins this season, Sunday's 4-3 result at Seattle U (6-6, 1-1 WAC) was the tightest.
Underclassmen recorded points at all four of the bottom courts to clinch the match for the Lopes. Freshmen
Iva Sepa,
Elizaveta Morozova and
Valeriia Krokhotina and sophomore
Dania Deaifi each won their matchups in two sets.
The Lopes needed the support from Courts 3-6 after graduate
Natasha Puehse and senior
Santa Strombacha each lost their singles match for the first time this season. Both Puehse and Strombacha lost their bouts by identical lines of 6-4, 6-3. Puehse had a 26-match winning streak snapped and Strombacha's streak of 12 straight wins ended.
Along with Tarleton State and Abilene Christian, GCU was one of three teams to start WAC play 2-0. The Lopes have a split week on the horizon with a home match against UT Rio Grande Valley on Thursday and a match at Stephen F. Austin on Saturday.
