GCU beats UTRGV 7-0, for 11th shutout of season

Grand Canyon won convincingly Thursday afternoon, with a 7-0 sweep of UT Rio Grande Valley. The win at GCU Tennis Facility matched a season-high win streak of six matches.

The 7-0 victory marked GCU's 11th sweep of its opponents this season, continuing the trend of production from Courts 1 through 6.

GCU (15-2, 3-0 WAC) took all three sets for the doubles point and did not slow down in singles. All six singles matches finished in straight sets in favor of the Lopes. Senior Santa Strombacha and freshman Elizaveta Morozova did not drop a game with 6-0, 6-0 wins.

The Lopes' No. 1 singles player, graduate Natasha Puehse, followed Strombacha's suit, bouncing back from her first singles match loss of the season. Things did not come as easy however, as Puehse fought off Marjorie Souza of UTRGV (8-9, 0-3 WAC) with a 7-5 win of set two after a 6-0 sweep in set one.

GCU is tied atop the WAC alongside Tarleton State (12-2, 3-0 WAC) with four games remaining on the regular-season slate. The Lopes will hit the road to meet Stephen F. Austin on Saturday at 9 a.m. (Phoenix time).
