Coming off consecutive top-five tournament finishes to begin the spring season, the Grand Canyon men's golf team looks to keep its momentum going on its home course of GCU Golf Course in the GCU Invitational.
It has been nearly a month since the Lopes last took the course, finishing fourth in the highly touted John A. Burns Intercollegiate field in Lihue, Hawaii. It began the season placing second at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, where Lopes senior
Nicky Kling placed second and earned WAC Golfer of the Week the next day.
The par-71 home course in Phoenix will play at 7,124 yards for two rounds Tuesday and 7,206 yards for the final round on Wednesday. The tournament will begin each day with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
Sixteen teams will compete over the course of two days, including three WAC schools in GCU, California Baptist and UT Arlington. GCU ranks No. 63 in the nation, its best ranking in program history and the second highest in the field behind only No. 50 Washington State. No, 73 Cal State Fullerton puts three top-75 teams in the field.
The full field also includes Columbia, Drake, Austin Peay, Omaha, Creighton, Navy, St. Thomas, Kansas City, Northern Colorado, Pacific and Valparaiso.
The Lopes will field a starting five of Kling, freshman
Gavin O'Neill and seniors
Matthew Pennington,
Tommaso Zorzetto and
Craig Passmore. Passmore makes his first start of the season. Junior
Josh McCabe, senior
Warner Beach and sophomores
Jake Lawson,
Joseph Cardon and
Antonio Bulgheroni will also play the tournament as individual entries for GCU.
