SPOKANE, Wash. — The Grand Canyon track and field team continued to break records in the Riverfront Invitational and Multis.
"We had a great weekend in Spokane at the Riverfront Invitational," Lopes head coach
Tom Flood said. "We were started off by
Summer Grubbs breaking our school record in the pentathlon with a WAC-leading score of 3,840."
Grubbs grabbed attention on Thursday's multi-event competition, where fellow GCU multi-event athletes
Casey Tow and
Patrick Nelson also had solid efforts. Tow's performance took over the WAC lead with 5,189 points.
"On Day 2,
Erin Brown quickly let everyone know he was back in the building by breaking his own school record in the 200 meters with a school record and a facility record," Flood said. "It was also the 13th-fastest time in the NCAA with a mark of 20.76 (seconds)."
Brown's fellow Sam Houston State transfer,
Daviciea McCartney, also had an outstanding time.
"Our third day of the meet was highlighted by Daviciea's performance in the 60-meter hurdles," Flood said. "He broke the oldest school record on the men's side in indoor history with a time of 7.71 seconds."
That time not only extends McCartney's lead in the WAC but is also the 15th-fastest time in the NCAA.
For the Lopes,
JoJo Harding dazzled in the 60-meter finals, where he now holds the WAC-leading time of 6.68 seconds.
Neysia Howard also took the conference lead in the women's 60 with her time of 7.48 seconds.
Eric Cabais-Fernandez improved on his season-best pole vault mark with a new personal best and WAC lead of 5.26 meters.
"We come out of this meet in really good shape and will look to stay sharp and rest some folks this next week back in Albuquerque," Flood said. "We will look to make lots of noise in two weeks at the WAC Championships."
