DENTON, Texas – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team kept rolling with a 4-0 shutout over North Texas in its first road match of the season on Saturday.
The No. 49 Lopes (9-1) picked up their sixth consecutive shutout victory with strong play at the top of the singles lineup and a clutch doubles points. The Lopes extended their best start in the program's Division I era.
The match started with GCU clinching the doubles point. GCU freshmen
Elizaveta Morozova and
Iva Sepa improved to 5-0 at Court 3 with a 6-2 win. North Texas (6-5) countered with a 6-2 win at No. 2 over GCU's
Valentina Del Marco and
Valeriia Krokhotina. The doubles point came down to the No. 1 court, where GCU seniors
Natasha Puehse and
Santa Strombacha won 6-2 to clinch the point.
With the 1-0 lead secured, the Lopes pressed their advantage in singles by winning the first set on five of the six courts. Puehse cruised to her ninth consecutive win at the top singles court with a 6-1, 6-2 victory, while Sepa also won her match in straight sets at Court 3.
The dual-match win was clinched by Strombacha with a 6-0, 5-7, 6-1 win at No. 2. It was the fifth time this season that the top three GCU singles courts all won in the same match. GCU is 36-4 in singles play this season
The Lopes also held leads on the bottom three courts, but those matches were left unfinished.
GCU will wrap up the two-match road trip Sunday at Baylor starting at 9 a.m. (Phoenix time).
