The Grand Canyon women's tennis team pushed their winning streak to five match with a 4-0 shutout over Cal Poly at GCU Tennis Facility on Saturday afternoon.
The Lopes (8-1) extended their best start since 2014 thanks to their fifth straight shutout. So far this season the Lopes have allowed opponents to score just six points through the first nine games of the year.
GCU took the early 1-0 lead by clinching the doubles point with wins at the top and bottom court. Freshmen duo
Iva Sepa and
Elizaveta Morozova improved to 4-0 with a 6-2 win at the third court. That quick win set up graduate
Natasha Puehse and senior
Santa Strombacha to clinch the point with a 6-4 win at the top position.
With the 1-0 lead secured the Lopes pushed their advantage in singles winning the first set on all six courts. Puehse improved to 8-0 at the top singles court with a 6-2, 6-2 win while freshmen
Valeriia Krokhotina won her fifth match in a row at court four. The dual match win was clinched by sophomore
Dania Deaifi at court six with a 6-2, 6-4 win, her fourth in a row.
The Lopes were up on other courts when the match was called. Morozova was one game away from clinching the win at No. 5 leading 6-4, 5-4 while Sepa held a 6-3, 6-5 advantage at No. 3.
With the season opening homestand now complete the Lopes will hit the road for the first time next weekend. GCU will travel to North Texas and Baylor on Feb. 23 and 25.
