SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's soccer team fell 3-0 to San Jose State at the Spartan Soccer Complex on Thursday evening.
The loss kept GCU (5-9-3, 2-5-1 WAC) at seven points in the conference standings, where the Lopes are two points back of sixth-place team UT Rio Grande Valley for the final tournament slot.
Utah Valley (eight points) could end GCU's postseason hopes with a win Friday night at San Diego State, where the Wolverines and Aztecs were postponed Thursday. The Lopes also need Utah Tech, also with eight points, to lose or ite Sunday against UNLV and UTRGV to lose Sunday at San Jose State. Should Utah Valey lose or tie Friday, GCU also needs the Wolverines to lose or tie Sunday if they lost Friday or lose if they tied Friday.
If all of those scenarios occurred, GCU could make the WAC Tournament by snapping its five-match winless streak with a victory at Seattle U on Sunday.
GCU allowed three goals for the first time this season, previously allowing two goals in only four of its previous16 matches.
San Jose State (4-7-6, 3-3-2 WAC) scored its first goal Thursday within the match's first 10 minutes, netting an eighth-minute goal from 15 yards out. Seven minutes later, the Spartans added its second goal to lead 2-0. GCU entered the night having allowed only five first-half goals all season.
San Jose State scored the third and final goal in the 87th minute. The Spartans outshot the Lopes 14-3 with GCU senior goalkeeper
Leon Schmidt making four saves. The Lopes set a new season high in corner kicks with seven, but the 18-5 foul ration was against the Lopes.
GCU closes the regular season Sunday at second-place Seattle U (9-4-3, 6-1-1 WAC). Kickoff is set for noon (Phoenix time).
