Lopes junior wins women's championship match with Stanford partner
HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. — GCU junior blocker Samaya Morin won the USA Volleyball U21 FIVB Beach World Championship Trials with partner Taylor Wilson of Stanford. The pair will represent the U.S. at the 2023 FIVB U21 Beach World Championships in Roi-Et, Thailand on Nov. 8-12.Â
"I'm so excited to be able to represent my country and GCU," Morin said. "It is an honor to be part of both organizations and I can't wait to play in Thailand with Taylor."
Morin and Wilson prevailed over Sally Perez and Alexa Fernandez in Thursday afternoon's championship game (21-12, 25-27, 15-13), going undefeated through seven matches in the tournament. They won 21 of 23 sets.
The Lope and Cardinal did not lose a set in pool play and earned the No. 7 seed in the 24-team main draw, where they won their first two matches on Wednesday (22-20, 21-13 and 24-22, 19-21, 15-9) before beating UCLA's Jessie Smith and Cal Poly's Ella Connor in a Thursday semifinal that secured a place in the championship match.
As a sophomore this spring, Morin was part of a GCU team that qualified for the NCAA tournament for a second consecutive year and finished the season ranked No. 9 in the nation.
