Jess Drake lands 25 kills and five digs in Hawaii win

HONOLULU – Grand Canyon wrapped up its stay in Hawaii with a split doubleheader against a pair of ranked opponents, falling to No. 10 California before rebounding to top No. 16 Hawai'i on Saturday night after dark.

In the afternoon match, the No. 13 Lopes (19-8) dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 10 Cal (22-6), with the Golden Bears clinching the dual behind wins on four of five courts.

GCU's lone point came at the No. 4 flight, where junior Karynn Garrow and sophomore Sophia Hladyniuk outlasted Jenna Colligan and Christine DeRoos in three sets, 21-14, 17-21, 15-6.

GCU's top pair of Adriana Ferro and Ines Piret forced a third set against Emma Donley and Portia Sherman but ultimately fell, 21-17, 19-21, 15-6.

The Lopes responded in the evening dual with a hard-fought 4-1 win over host No. 16 Hawai'i (12-19). Four of the five matchups went to three sets, with GCU prevailing in three of them.

Rhea Kohl and Katie Keefe clinched the dual after battling through a tight match in the flight two win 15-21, 23-21, 19-17.

The Drake sisters also bounced back with a gritty 12-21, 21-17, 15-9 win in flight three. The ESPN+ broadcast listed Jess with 25 kills, one block, one service ace and five digs.

Garrow and Hladyniuk remained steady in flight four, claiming their second win of the day with a 16-21, 21-19, 15-11 victory.

The Lopes conclude their weekend in Honolulu with a 2-2 record and now turn their attention to the upcoming final stretch of the season where they will head to TCU next weekend to close out the regular season against the Horned Frogs, Missouri State, Louisiana-Monroe and Houston Christian.
