Jessica Drake reaches 60 career wins
HONOLULU – No. 13 Grand Canyon split its Saturday doubleheader at Ching Complex, topping No. 16 Hawai'i 4-1 before falling to No. 10 California 4-1 in the nightcap.
The Lopes opened the day with a dominant performance against host Hawai'i, winning four of five matches. The No. 2 sister pairing of Becca Drake and Jessica Drake delivered a three-set victory to secure the clinching point, earning Jessica her 60th career beach volleyball win in her junior season.
GCU's other victories against the Rainbow Wahine came at the Nos. 3-5 flights. Lopes junior Katie Keefe and sophomore Rhea Kohl cruised in straight sets at No. 3, while GCU sophomore Karynn Garrow and senior partner Sophie Hladyniuk rallied for a three-set win at No. 4. Lopes senior Madi Bogle and sophomore Regan Holmer set the tone early with a sweep at No. 5.
Later in the day, GCU (18-7) faced a strong California squad and dropped a well-contested match, with three of the five losses going the distance. Keefe and Kohl remained unbeaten on the day with another straight-set win at the No. 3 flight, but the Bears edged out the Lopes in close matches at Nos. 4 and 5 to secure the victory.
