Grand Canyon returns home from a lengthy road trip to close out the regular season at home against California Baptist in a three-game series beginning on Thursday. Already having clinched a top-two seed and a first-round bye in the conference tournament, the Lopes could still win a WAC regular-season title and clinch the No. 1 seed in the tournament but need help from Tarleton against Sam Houston.
All three games will be available on ESPN+.
Â
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- STANDINGS WATCH:Â Grand Canyon currently sits alone in second place in the WAC standings. The Lopes have clinched a top-two seed in the WAC Tournament. The tournament's top two seeds share an advantage of not only receiving a first-round bye, but being paired up against a team who had to play in the first round on Tuesday. By virtue of not completing all three games in Edinburg, Texas, last weekend, the Lopes now sit 1.5 games back of Sam Houston and would need to make up two games on the Bearkats to take a regular-season title and the No. 1 seed.
Â
- SENIOR WATCH:Â GCU will bid farewell to seven seniors in a pregame ceremony at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday. The Lopes will honor: Jacob Martinez, Hunter Omlid, Josh Buckley, Shawn Triplett, Ronnie Belton III, Blake Reilly and Brodie Cooper-Vassalakis. The program will also say farewell to senior undergraduate manager Matthew Mitchell and analytics team manager Jason Forari.
Â
- RECORD WATCH:Â It could be an eventful weekend in the program's record books: GCU is looking to extend what is already a Division I program record of 10 consecutive wins ... GCU needs just 336 more fans to break its season cumulative attendance record ... junior Elijah Buries needs one more hit to reach the 200 mark for his career ... junior Jacob Wilson needs two more hits to break the program's D-I career hits record of 217 ... junior Homer Bush Jr. needs two more stolen bases to break the program's single-season D-I stolen base record of 22 ... freshman Zach Yorke needs four more RBIs to break the program's all-time freshman RBIs record of 61 ... Yorke needs six hits to break the program's all-time freshman hits record of 74 ... graduate Zack Gregory needs four more walks to break the program's single-season D-I record of 49.
Â
SCOUTING
California Baptist has plenty to play for entering the season's final weekend. A first-round tournament bye is still on the table for the Lancers who are currently in a four-team tie for fourth place in the WAC standings.
CBU has won two of its last four WAC series, defeating Sacramento State at home last weekend, falling to UT Arlington on the road, defeating Abilene Christian at home and dropping two of three to Tarleton at home.
The Lancers are in their first year of Division I postseason eligibility after completing the four-year transition from D-II.
CBU ranks No. 131 in batting average .284 and No. 100 in earned run average at 5.39.
Â
WHAT'S NEXT?
The WAC Tournament comes to Mesa's Hohokam Stadium where the Lopes will be a No. 1 or No. 2 seed and receive a bye from Tuesday's first-round action.
