LAS VEGAS – The Grand Canyon men's tennis fell to UNLV 4-1 on Friday in Las Vegas.

In the final tune-up match before conference play begins, the Lopes (4-9) jumped out to an early lead by capturing the doubles point before the Rebels (8-7) flipped momentum in singles by winning four courts to clinch the win.

In doubles, the Lopes clinched the point with wins at the bottom two courts. GCU freshmen
William Alsterback and
Mattia Ghedin won 6-3 at the No. 2 position while sophomore
Martim Marujo and freshman
Paolo Rosati clinched the point with a 6-4 win at Court 3. At the top court, sophomore
Jonathan Da Silva and freshman
David Wekesa had their match left unfinished trailing 6-5.

In singles, UNLV took the first set on four courts and parlayed those into straight-set wins to clinch the team win. The Lopes fell in the top three courts to give UNLV a 3-1 lead and the match was clinched with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Ghedin.

The other two matches were left unfinished with GCU battling on each court. Wekesa was up in his second set, 4-3, on Court 5 after winning his first set in a tiebreaker while Rosati was up in his third set 3-1 at Court 4.

The Lopes will be back in action next week for the start of conference play at Abilene Christian and New Mexico State on March 31 and April 2.
