BOULDER CITY, Nev. – After a record-breaking performance in Monday's first and second rounds of the Jackrabbit Invitational at Boulder Creek Golf Club, the Grand Canyon women's golf team kept pace Tuesday and finished at the top of the leaderboard at even par to claim the team title while Lopes junior
Constanza Guerrero was the tournament's co-champion with a 6-under-par, 54-hole score.
The Lopes shot 10 over par in the third round for the third-best score in the 14-team field. GCU finished seven shots ahead of second-place Lipscomb and 20 shots better than third-place Western Carolina.
"I'm so proud of this team," GCU head coach
Lauren Giesecke said. "We have been working very hard on and off the course, so to end this tournament with a victory is so special. Every one of them stepped up and played well for their teammates. It was super fun to see them break some records yesterday and see how much that means to them. This is the first stop on our spring break trip, so we are looking forward to Sedona in a couple days but are going to enjoy this win."
GCU had the best par-4 and par-5 scoring averages at 4.11 and 4.77, respectively. It recorded the most birdies over 54 holes (44), second-most pars (171) and joined South Dakota State as the only teams to tally two eagles.
Guerrero shared her win with Western Carolina's Elizabeth Lobhauer after the Spaniard shot rounds of 71, 65 and 74. Guerrero registered 14 birdies for the tournament, including eight in her second round. The first-place individual finish is the secon straight for the Lopes, as Guerrero joins junior Lani Laufalealo as GCU's individual winners this year.
"Constanza's performance was unbelievable this tournament," Giesecke said. "She's been so close in a lot of events this spring, so it was important for her stay patient and trust that her game will shine. And she did it. She broke records and helped elevate this team to a victory in the process. We are always talking about staying patient, putting in the work and trusting herself because when she does, a victory is the result."
Also in the top five was GCU freshman
Ryan Flynn, who shot 1 under par for the tournament with rounds of 72, 70 and 73. Flynn had eight birdies and an eagle between the two days with four birdies in the final round as she finished Tuesday at 1 over. Lopes junior
Becca Tschetter carded a 1-over-par final round for a 4-over total, tying her for 12th with seven birdies.
GCU senior
Carmen Belmonte's gave GCU its fourth player in the top 15, as she tied for 15th at 5 over par. Belmonte had eight birdies and an eagle for the tournament. Junior teammate
Carly Strole tied for 37th at 12 over par, while sophomore
Kailey Bass tied for 20th at 6 over par as an individual entry.
The Lopes stay on the road and travel to Sedona, Arizona, to partake in the two-day Red Rocks Invitational hosted by Northern Arizona. First-day action begins Saturday.
