THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- FIRST WIN IN THE BOOKS: The Lopes picked up their first win of the season last week at home against UC Riverside. In the 6-1 win the Lopes had a strong showing in doubles with 6-0 and 6-1 wins and took that momentum in singles winning five courts in straight sets. Junior Santa Strombacha extended her winning streak in singles to four matches winning 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 position.
- GCU DUO HONORED: The No. 1 GCU doubles pair of Natasha Puehse and Santa Strombacha were honored with their second WAC Doubles Players of Week award on Wednesday. Against the Highlanders last week Puehse and Strombacha shutout UCR's Brionna Nguyen and Maya Youssef 6-0 as the Lopes went on to win the doubles point and take the match 6-1.
- HOMESTAND INCOMING: This will be the final road trip for the Lopes before a long six-match homestand begins on Feb. 26 against Weber State. The Lopes will also host Baylor, Air Force and New Mexico in the final nonconference matches before WAC play starts. The Lopes will host Seattle U and Utah Tech on March 17 and 19 to start conference play.
SCOUTING
San Jose State enters this weekend on a two-match win streak with wins over UC Davis and Cal State Fullerton. The win against the Titans on Feb. 11 was the first home match for the Spartans this season. Junior Irena Muradyan has been one of the most consistent players this season with a 4-1 record in singles at the No. 3 position.Santa Clara is still looking for their first win this season after starting 0-4 in 2023. The Broncos are in the midst of an eight-match homestand before hitting the road for the first time on March 17. Graduate student Dasee Carter has a 2-1 record in singles at courts five and six to lead the team.
