FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team lost a close 4-3 match at Northern Arizona on Friday.
The doubles point was the difference in a close match as the Lopes (0-5) came close to ending the Lumberjacks' 23-match home winning streak.
Playing indoors for the first time this season, GCU lost the early doubles point to fall behind 1-0. NAU (1-1) won the first match 6-2 at Court 3 over GCU freshman duo
Dania Deaifi and
Hebe Toyos, but the Lopes responded with a win at the top court. Senior
Natasha Puehse and junior
Santa Strombacha picked up their first win as a duo by a 6-3 score.
The Lumberjacks clinched the doubles point at Court 2 with a 6-4 win over GCU graduate
Madeline Lamoreaux and freshman
Anali Kocevar.
In singles, NAU quickly extended its lead to 3-0 with a pair of 6-0, 6-1 wins at No. 1 over Puehse and at No. 6 over junior
Aline Buhr in her first match of the season. Lamoreaux responded for GCU at Court 5 with a straight-set win to pull ahead 3-1.
The Lumberjacks clinched the dual-match win with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Deaifi at Court 4 to make it a 4-1 dual-match score.
With two matches still playing, the Lopes continued to fight and won on both courts in three-set matches. Kocevar split her opening sets, 6-1-, 1-6 before responding with a 6-1 third set to beat NAU's Elinor Beazley. Meanwhile, at Court 2, Strombacha claimed her third straight win in a 10-6, third-set tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets, 5-7, 6-2.
The Lopes will be back in action on Feb. 8 at the GCU Tennis Facility when they face UC Riverside at 2:30 p.m.
