TUCSON, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team fell 4-0 at Arizona on Sunday.
The Lopes (0-4) had good performances in singles at the top of the lineup, but those matches were left unfinished as the Wildcats (3-0) collected the doubles point and three singles wins at the bottom of the lineup to clinch the 4-0 win.
In doubles, the Wildcats took the 1-0 lead with wins at the top two courts. GCU senior
Natasha Puehse and freshman
Anali Kocevar, in her first action of the season, played at the top doubles position and lost 6-3. Meanwhile, Lopes junior
Santa Strombacha and sophomore
Valentina Del Marco lost 6-3 at Court 2 to give Arizona the doubles point.
At Court 3, the Lopes were competitive with graduate
Madeline Lamoreaux and freshman
Hebe Toyos tied at 5-5 against the Wildcats' Belen Nevenhoven and Parker Fry when their match was called because of the doubles point being clinched.
In singles, the Lopes battled at the top two courts, but Arizona pushed their advantage farther down the lineup. Puehse rebounded from a 6-3 loss in the first set at the top singles court to be in a 4-4, second-set tie when her match was called.
At No. 2, Strombacha nearly won in straight sets, but her match was abandoned with the GCU junior leading 6-4, 5-0.
The Wildcats controlled the rest of the singles matches and won at Courts 4 through 6 in straight sets to clinch the 4-0, dual-match win.
The Lopes will be back in action Friday at Northern Arizona.
