TUCSON, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team dropped the first of two matches in Tucson over the weekend, falling 4-2 to Cal Poly on Saturday.
The Lopes (0-3) lost the doubles point but saw continued success in singles with junior
Santa Strombacha picking up her second straight win.
In doubles, the Mustangs (1-0) took the 1-0 lead with wins at Courts 1 and 3. GCU freshman
Dania Deaifi and sophomore
Valentina Del Marco lost 6-3 at No. 3 while senior
Natasha Puehse and Strombacha lost 6-3 at the top position. Lopes freshman
Hebe Toyos and graduate
Madeline Lamoreaux trailed 5-3 when their match was left unfinished.
In singles, the Lopes responded quickly to tie the match at 1-1 with Strombacha's 6-2, 6-0 win over Cal Poly's Melissa LaMette. Strombacha also won her previous match against UC San Diego.
Cal Poly controlled the rest of the singles matches, picking up straight-set wins on three courts to clinch the dual-match win at 4-1. Puehse battled back in her match at the top singles position, winning her second set 6-0 after dropping the first set. Her match was left unfinished at 4-6, 6-0, 4-2.
The Lopes will be back in action Sunday against host Arizona at 3 p.m.
