FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — First-year Grand Canyon head coach
Paul Limpf made his debut as the Lopes opened the 2022 cross country season at the George Kyte Classic on Saturday.
"I'm really excited about the way both teams performed today," Limpf said. "They all responded really well, considering we've been together less than a week and still getting to know each other."
The meet was hosted by Northern Arizona, and the Lumberjacks had the first seven finishers on the men's side and first four finishers on the women's side.
"The men's race went out really fast with a tough NAU squad showing why they are the top team in the nation," Limpf said. "The guys responded really well despite the fast early pace and settled in well."
The Buffalo Park course featured a 4.5-mile run for the men and a 2.5-mile run for the women.
GCU was led by redshirt sophomore
Joseph Skoog (23 minutes, 26.4 seconds) on the men's side and junior
Katie Hooten (15:46.2) on the women's side.
"
Joseph Skoog led the way for the men with senior
Christian Fagerlin not far behind," Limpf said. "Both ran personal bests on the course. We had multiple guys behind them set personal bests, which was encouraging to see. We had a lot of freshmen in their first race, which can be intimidating, but they handled it well and gave us a great starting point."
With representatives from nine schools in the women's race, GCU finished third behind Northern Arizona and Arizona.
"The women, wow, just incredible," Limpf said. "We had a lot of athletes who have had struggles in the past and yet they all showed up today and ran incredibly well.
"
Katie Hooten has been unable to have a cross country season to this point but led the way. Not far behind her was (Hillsdale transfer)
Abby Scherer, who ran her first race at altitude. Much like the men, the women had multiple personal bests for this course.
"We had a couple of athletes on both sides who sat out for precautionary reasons and will only add to the excitement when we run at Riverside in two weeks."
GCU will be in Riverside, California, in two weeks for the UC Riverside Invitational on Sept. 17.
