The Grand Canyon cross country season continues into its second meet of the season, as the Lopes head to Riverside, California, for the UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday.
The Lopes have plenty of familiarity with UC Riverside's home course, the Agricultural Operations Course that is adjacent to the school's campus. GCU competed in two events at the facility a year ago: at the Highlander Invitational in mid-October and at the WAC Championships.
Saturday's events include a women's 6,000-meter run beginning at 7:15 a.m. and a men's 8,000-meter race beginning at 7:50 a.m. Live results are available
here.
The UC Riverside course is mostly flat with a few rolling hills and hard-packed dirt with pre-competition watering to reduce dust. It is run through the school's agricultural operations center, which features 100-year-old citrus trees.
GCU returns to competition for the second time this year after getting the season underway at the George Kyte Classic in Flagstaff, Arizona, two weeks ago. The Lopes were led by redshirt sophomore
Joseph Skoog (23 minutes, 26.4 seconds in the 4.5-mile run) on the men's side and junior
Katie Hooten (15:46.2 in the 2.5-mile run) on the women's side.
The Lopes had a few memorable accomplishments when running at UC Riverside last year. Former GCU runners
Jacob Lewis and
Braedon Palmer set the program's overall record and freshman record, respectively, for an 8,000-meter run.Â
"The men had a really good day," then-Lopes head coach Sara Slattery said following the Oct. 16, 2021, meet. "This was their best race as a team in school history. We were impressed with the front running early on and how they held it."
Two weeks later, the men capitalized on their return to the UC Riverside Agricultural Operations Course with a program-best third-place finish among 13 WAC schools.
GCU will look to make more program history when it takes to the course again early Saturday morning.
