Grand Canyon yielded a seven-run third inning to California Baptist, as the Lopes dropped the series finale 11-5 at GCU Ballpark on Saturday.
GCU (25-12, 15-3 WAC) ended the year 5-1 against the Lancers (23-11, 9-6 WAC) and holds a 4 1/2-game lead in the WAC West Division standings.
The Lancers jumped out to a commanding lead when their first eight batters of the third inning reached on base hits. That stretch included two home runs — one a grand slam. CBU emerged from the third inning with a 7-0 lead.
GCU outscored California Baptist 5-4 through the final six innings but the damage was done.
Lopes junior right fielder
Tayler Aguilar got GCU on the board with an RBI double in the fourth. Sophomore catcher
Tyler Wilson came through with an RBI single in the sixth. Senior
Juan Colato hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Colato added another RBI to his tally in the ninth and later scored on an error to close out GCU's scoring.
The Lopes used seven pitchers to navigate the game. Graduate
Kyle Sandstrom threw 1 2/3 of scoreless baseball.
GCU's eight-game winning streak was snapped, but the Lopes continued a six-game series win streak in conference action.
The Lopes will play the next nine games on the road beginning with a four-game weekend in San Diego split between San Diego State and Stanford.
