THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- WAC CHAMP SCENARIOS: Heading into tomorrow's match the Lopes need to defeat Chicago State to clinch at least a share of the WAC West Division title. The outright title could be decided on Saturday against the Aggies in a head-to-head matchup. The Lopes and Aggies can be co-champs if either team finishes with one loss on the weekend.
Β - TOURNAMENT SEEDING:Β Along with winning a regular season title the Lopes are competingΒ for the No. 1 overall seed in next week's WAC Tournament. Two wins earns GCU the top seed while a win over Chicago State and a loss to NMSU earns them the second seed. EightΒ total teams will make the WAC Tournament, the top three from each division and the two next best teams. Tarleton who leads the Southwest Division with a 4-0 record and Dixie State in the West Division are both ineligible for the tournament due to NCAA D-I transitionΒ rules.
Β - SENIOR DAY: The Lopes will wrap up the regular season on Monday against Northern Arizona at home. GCU wil honor fourΒ seniors before taking on the Lumberjacks at 11 a.m.
SCOUTING
Chicago StateΒ enters the week on a seven match losing streak but have played well dropping two close 4-3 decisions to New Mexico State and Seattle U in the previous WAC pod on April 2 and 3. The Cougars have a slim chance of making it back to the WAC Tournament for the second consecutive year, they need to defeat the Lopes and Dixie State in back to back days. Katarina Dukic leads the team with 10 singles wins while a trio of doubles teams each have three wins.New Mexico State enters this weekend tied atop the West Division standings with the Lopes setting up a potentialΒ winner take all match on Saturday. The Aggies defeated Dixie State and Chicago State in the first WAC pod in Seattle in early April. The team has been involved in close matches recently with five of the past seven contests going the distance at 4-3 scorelines. Senior Gavi Kalaga leads the Aggies with an 8-12 record in singles with a 2-0 mark in WAC play while junior Chloe Gavino and freshman Lisa Zhu have been rock solid in doubles with an 11-3 mark and a perfect record in conference play.
