The Grand Canyon women's tennis team continued its hot play with a 5-2 win over Chicago State on Thursday at the GCU Tennis Facility.
Â
With the win by the Lopes (7-8, 3-0 WAC), they moved closer to repeating as the WAC regular-season champion. If New Mexico State loses to Seattle U on Friday, GCU will earn at least a share of the title. If the Aggies win, it will set up a potential winner-take-all match on Saturday with both teams sitting at a 3-0 record.
Â
Against the Cougars (6-15, 0-3 WAC), the Lopes took the doubles point with wins on the top two courts. Senior duo
Autum Prudhomme and
Fabienne Schmidt improved to 9-5 on the season with a quick 6-0 win at No. 2. The doubles point was clinched by the GCU top duo of junior
Natasha Puehse and sophomore
Santa Strombacha with a 6-2 win at No. 1. The GCU pair has now won eight straight games for a 10-3 record. The Cougars picked up a win at Court 3 after the point was clinched.
Â
In singles, the Lopes started strongly with five first-set wins. Puehse, at Court 1, and Prudhomme, at Court 5, had quick 6-1, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-0 wins to extend the GCU lead to 3-0. Shortly after those victories, Schmidt wrapped up the dual-match win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at Court 2.
Â
With GCU leading 4-0, Strombacha put the finishing touches on the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3. Chicago State countered with a pair of three-set wins over senior
Jana Weiss and freshman
Sara Rakim at Courts 4 and 6 to conclude the match.
Â
GCU and New Mexico State will meet in the final WAC match of the regular season on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the GCU Tennis Facility.
