The Grand Canyon women's tennis team got back in the win column with a 4-0 sweep of Drake on Thursday at GCU Tennis Facility.
Â
The Lopes (3-7) took the doubles point and then three singles courts to complete their second shutout of the season.
Â
In doubles, GCU took the 1-0 lead over Drake (7-6) with wins at the top two courts. After the Bulldogs won 6-1 at Court 3 over senior
Jana Weiss and freshman
Sara Rakim, GCU held a comfortable lead on the other courts. Junior
Natasha Puehse and sophomore
Santa Strombacha won 6-2 at No. 1 followed quickly by fifth-year senior
Autum Prudhomme and graduate
Fabienne Schmidt's 6-1 win at No. 2.
Â
Leading 1-0, the Lopes pressed their advantage in singles by winning four first sets at the top four courts. Puehse put in a dominating performance at the top singles court, winning 6-2, 6-1 in a match that took less than an hour.
Â
On the court next to Puehse, Strombacha was just as dominant in a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Drake's Daria Walczak to push GCU's lead to 3-0.
Â
The dual-match win was clinched by Prudhomme at Court 4 in a back-and-forth battle. After Prudhomme took the first set 6-1, she fell behind 4-1 to Drake's Mille Haagensen in the second set. The GCU senior battled back and won the four of the next five games to tie the set 5-5 before closing out the match at 7-5.
Â
The final three singles matches were left unfinished as Schmidt was locked in battle in her second set, trailing 5-4.
Â
The Lopes will be back in action on Monday, when they take on Idaho State at GCU Tennis Facility. The match will start at 2 p.m.
