The Grand Canyon women's tennis team lost a 4-0 match at in-state nemesis Arizona on Tuesday.
Â
The Lopes (2-6) lost the doubles point despite a top-court victory and Arizona (12-6) won at three singles courts to clinch the team win.
Â
"The girls put up a great fight today," GCU head coach
Greg Prudhomme said. "It doesn't show in the clinch score at 4-0 but it was one of our best matches of the season and we're excited about that because it's coming at a good time since we are approaching the second half."
Â
In doubles, the top GCU pair of junior
Natasha Puehse and sophomore
Santa Strombacha won 6-3 at the No. 1 court. The Lopes fought on the other courts, but Arizona clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at Court 2 and a 6-2 win at Court 3.
Â
"Doubles was great right from the start with Natasha and Santa getting the win at No. 1," Prudhomme said. "The other two courts made those close contests, especially with two players out of the lineup."
Â
In singles, the Wildcats followed up their 1-0 lead and took the first set on four courts. At Court 3, Strombacha took her first set 6-4 while fifth-year senior
Autum Prudhomme picked up a 6-2 first-set win at Court 4. Both matches were left unfinished in the second set.
Â
The Wildcats clinched the team win with singles wins at Court 1 over Puehse and back-to-back wins at Courts 5 and 6..
Â
The Lopes will be back in action on Thursday at home against Drake. The match will start at noon at GCU Tennis Facility.
