BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Grand Canyon women's golf team kicked off its spring season with a second-place finish at the 12-team Valley Invitational.
After two rounds, the Lopes were in second place behind San Francisco and that is where they finished when they closed the gap from 12 strokes to five strokes on Tuesday.
GCU had three top-11 finishers, with senior
Siripatsorn Patchana placing third after moving up 13 spots during the final round. She shot 4 under par on Tuesday with the lowest score of the three-round tournament. Patchana collected six birdies on Tuesday, including four straight on holes 11-14.
Lopes sophomore
Constanza Guerrero tied for eighth with a final score of 9 over par. Phoenix native
Alexis Linam, a senior, was right behind Guerrero as she finished tied for 10th with a score of 10 over par. Linam shot her second-best round of the tournament with a 3-over-par final round.
Senior
Payton Fehringer finished in the top 20, as she tied for 18th at 15 over par. Arizona native
Carly Strole, a sophomore, jumped five spots from Day 1 after scoring her best round of the invitational with a 4-over-par score.
GCU puts 4 players in top 20 after 1st day
GCU enter Tuesday's final round 12 strokes behind leader San Francisco with Guerrero leading the Lopes at Bakersfield Country Club. The Huelva, Spain, native is in fifth place at 2 over par, just two strokes behind the co-leaders. In her first 18 holes, Guerrero finished at 2 over par by finishing with a birdie. She continued that strong play with an even-par second round.
Linam, a Lopes senior, is tied for 10th place after shooting 2 over par in her second round and jumping seven spots. In the second round, she totaled four birdies, including back-to-back ones on the second and third holes.
Two Lopes are tied for 16th in at the Valley Invitational, finishing 9 over par after two rounds. Fehringer and Patchana had nearly identical days on the course, as they both had rounds of 5 over par and 4 over par.
Strole, a GCU sophomore, rounds out the Lopes lineup in a tie for 46th after shooting 17 over par for two rounds. Strole improved throughout her rounds, playing the second round at 5 over par.
The Lopes are back in action on Monday when they travel to Las Vegas to compete in The Show, hosted by Furman.
