CEDAR CITY, Utah — The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team recorded three consecutive sweeps in WAC matches for the first time in program history with a 25-23, 25-15, 25-20 win at Southern Utah on Thursday night.
The Lopes (13-9, 7-4 WAC) moved into a fourth-place tie in the conference standings with another efficient offensive effort. The Lopes hit .362, giving them two of their top three hitting matches of the season during this three-sweep streak. It marks the first time that the Lopes have included a road victory in a three-game sweep since 2014.
Sophomore outside hitter
McKenzie Wise ripped a team-high 15 kills for her second-best total of the season and first double-digit kill performance since Sept. 16. The Phoenix Northwest Christian graduate hit .333 and added nine digs while graduate outside hitter
Melanie Brecka added 13 kills on .500 hitting.
"I was proud of our team today," GCU head coach
Tim Nollan said. "We once again were able to really perform on the offensive side of the ball. Mac had a great match, leading us in points (17) and the seniors — Belle (
Annabelle Kubinski), Hannah (Eskes) and Mel (Brecka) — all put together really nice matches."
The Lopes' most tense time came in the first set, when they led most of the way after Wise delivered two kills during a stretch of four unanswered points that put GCU ahead 8-4. With a balanced first-half attack off 16 of senior setter
Klaire Mitchell's 39 assists in the match, the Lopes shook off a 21-20 deficit with another 4-0 run that was keyed by two kills from graduate middle blocker
Annabelle Kubinski. A Thunderbirds error closed out the 25-23 Lopes win.
"What else can I say about
Klaire Mitchell?" Nollan said after Mitchell's 10th double-double, including four in the past five matches. "Ran an incredible offense for us and chipped in three aces as well."
Southern Utah took a 3-1 lead in the second set before GCU took command with the help of three consecutive Wise kills that took its lead to 13-5. Brecka and Wise each delivered six second-kills and the Lopes took a 2-0 match lead on a dominant 25-15 set.
Nollan went deeper in his lineup without GCU ever trailing in the third set. At 21-19, Lopes freshman outside hitter
Tatum Parrott recorded two of her nine kills consecutively off Mitchell assists to give GCU a 23-19 lead. Kubinski stuffed the final point for her sixth kill on 10 attempts.
GCU plays its regular-season road finale Saturday at Utah Tech.
