To begin the regular season's final week, the Grand Canyon women's volleyball team won its fifth straight match via a sweep by defeating Seattle U 25-16, 25-10 and 25-14 on Thursday night at GCU Arena.
The Lopes (14-9, 9-4 WAC) have swept five straight matches for the first time since 1999.
GCU moved into fourth place in the WAC following UT Arlington's loss to Utah Tech. With a win against Utah Valley on Saturday, the Lopes would clinch the No. 3 seed in next week's WAC Tournament.
"I feel like we're starting to play our best volleyball at the best time of the year to play good volleyball," Lopes head coach
Tim Nollan said. "Everything we're doing is prepping for the conference tournament. Every match we play, we're trying to implement a few new things or a few wrinkles here or there, getting us ready to compete at our best next week in the WAC Tournament."
GCU re-broke the program's Division I-era record that it set earlier this season with a scorching .465 hitting percentage. That topped the mark of .447 set against Sam Houston on Oct. 29 in the second sweep of the Lopes' current five-sweep streak.
The Lopes used 17 players in a match that fell one point shy of matching GCU's lowest opponent scoring game of the year.
"We got a lot of people in the match tonight that got to contribute and showcase what they do every day in practice," Nollan said. "A lot of times, we don't get to play everyone, but everyone works very hard on this team in practice and competes very well. They got to contribute tonight on the box score."
Lopes outside hitters
McKenzie Wise, a sophomore, and
Tatum Parrott, a freshman, led the team with eight kills apiece.
Nollan noted the contributions off the bench for sophomore setter
Megan Liu, freshman outside
Anaelena Ramirez (four kills on .667 hitting) and the extended playing time of all four middle blockers.
GCU will end the regular season with a high-stakes finale at 2 p.m. on Saturday against Utah Valley at GCU Arena.
"For us, we always talk about the most important match of the year is the one we're about to play," Nollan said. "This whole week, we talked Seattle. Starting tonight, we're going to talk about Utah Valley and really prep for it tomorrow. They're a well-coached club.
"The mentality for us is the same, though. The goal is for us to try to execute at the highest level we can no matter who we play."
