The Grand Canyon men's and women's cross country teams are headed to Nacogdoches, Texas, for the WAC Championships meet. The Lopes are hoping to keep the momentum going on Saturday when they look to make noise in the WAC Championships.
"We are excited to finally head into championship season," GCU head coach Paul Limpf said. "Fifty-eight days ago (61 on race day), we met for the first time on campus and it's been an incredible journey since then. We have grown a lot as a team over the last few months and take that momentum into Nacogdoches for the WAC Championships meet."
At the last meet, numerous Lopes runners had impressive results. On the women's side, freshman Kaitlyn Kaye is hoping to build on her stellar time of 21 minutes, 8 seconds in the last regular-season competition. In the same meet, sophomore Abby Scherer came up with a new personal record, finishing second with junior Katie Hooten taking first.
Clearly, the Lopes are peaking at the perfect time.
On the men's team, graduate
Christian Fagerlin also had a new personal best of 24:24.9. Sophomore
Joseph Skoog and graduate
Blake Bennett are coming off posting the best two times in school history for any 8,000-meter race, both under 24 minutes.
"The men have been picked fourth by the coaches and the women have been picked sixth," Limpf said. "Both of those picks give our teams something to shoot for this weekend and also gives them motivation as both teams look to surpass those rankings."
The meet begins on Saturday at 6 a.m. (Phoenix time).
"The course looks to be flat and fast and the weather once again looks to be the perfect cross country weather," Limpf said. "As a coach and an athlete, this is what you dream of when you think championship season."
